Bruce It Up:Yippee-Ki-Yay! Let John McClane Take Over Your English Class!

As educators, we’re always searching for innovative ways to spark student engagement and encourage active participation, especially when it comes to language learning. One game that’s been creating a buzz in my classroom is “Truth or Bruce”—a fun, twisty, interactive game that gets students talking, listening to each other, and learning all at once. With a unique blend of personal challenges and Bruce Willis trivia, this game is perfect for getting students to step out of their shells and engage in meaningful communication.

After initially having little more than the idea for the name of the game, I was able to develop all the material with AI fairly quickly. Including prompt entries in Google Gemini, manual adjustments to the prompts, checking the materials, creating the materials in Google Drive and a basic PPT for the game on the Internet, the game took me less than 15 minutes to develop.

What is “Truth or Bruce”?

“Truth or Bruce” is a clever spin on the classic “Truth or Dare,” designed specifically for the classroom with an emphasis on speaking practice. The twist? The game involves spinning a bottle to determine who answers questions from two categories: Truth and Bruce.

  • Truth: These are personal, sometimes challenging, and often funny questions that encourage students to open up about themselves. They answer these questions individually, sharing personal insights, funny stories, or reflecting on intriguing life situations. It’s a great way to get students talking and exploring their thoughts.
  • Bruce: This category is all about Bruce Willis! The questions dive into his movies, characters, and career. However, unlike the Truth questions, Bruce questions are answered by teams. Students collaborate to answer trivia, with points awarded for correct answers. The team aspect adds a competitive, fun dynamic that motivates students to work together.

For more advanced students, there’s an exciting twist: the “slippier” version of Truth questions. These are more personal and intriguing, perfect for older students who are ready for deeper conversation. As an added incentive, students can tackle these slippier questions for bonus points, making the game even more engaging.

Why It Works

“Truth or Bruce” works because it’s built around interaction, competition, and fun. The bottle-spinning element keeps things light and spontaneous, while the mix of individual and team-based questions ensures that every student has a role to play. By answering Truth questions individually, students reflect on personal experiences and learn to articulate them in English. The Bruce category, on the other hand, offers a team challenge, allowing students to pool their knowledge, discuss answers, and support each other.

The inclusion of bonus points for answering the slippier version of questions adds another layer of excitement and strategy, making the game more appealing to older students who crave something a little more daring.

How to Play

  1. Setup: Place your students in a circle and prepare a bottle to spin in the center. Divide students into teams for the Bruce questions, while the Truth questions will be answered individually.
  2. Game Mechanics:
    • Spin the Bottle: The bottle determines who will answer the next question.
    • Truth Questions: These are answered by the student the bottle points to. They must respond honestly and individually.
    • Bruce Questions: If the bottle lands on a student, their entire team collaborates to answer the Bruce question, aiming to earn points.
  3. Bonus Round: For extra engagement, students may opt to answer a “slippier” version of a Truth question for bonus points. This adds an extra layer of challenge for those who are eager to push their limits.
  4. Reflection and Scores: At the end of the game, tally up the points for both individual and team efforts. Students can reflect on what they learned, not just about English, but about themselves and each other.
